Every year since 1983, Coney Island has celebrated the start of summer and official opening of the Atlantic Ocean with an annual Mermaid Parade the third Saturday of June. The parade, which pays homage to the hugely popular ‪‎Coney Island‬ Mardi Gras parades of the early 1900s, is the largest procession of its kind in the U.S., attracting hundreds of professional and amateur entertainers and thousands of spectators from all over.
